Mom’s Kitchen Radio: Perfect With Grilled Cheese, Tomato Soup and Cherry Kool-Aid (Just add the sound of a slamming screen door and the smell of a Toni Home Permanent)

They were called “middle-of-the-road” stations ... and they played a little of everything that wasn’t rock and roll: Frank, Perry, Rosemary, country, broadway, a bit of light classical. In the Sixties they were where you were most likely to hear Johnny Mathis, Herb Alpert or Bert Kaempfert.

It’s what Dad listened to in the car or the shop or the barn. It’s what Mom played in the kitchen—often over our objections—while we waited for the school bus.

Ultimately we won. Rock and its cousins claimed most of the radio dial. Middle-of-the-road vanished, and no one noticed.

Well, hardly anyone. We noticed, and we still remember. We’d never forsake rock and roll, but now we miss Mom’s Kitchen Radio, just like we miss her meatloaf and mashed potatoes.
